Medicines for birds

What human medicines can be prescribed to birds?

Answer:

Hi Jadranka,

Thank you for viewing the webinar from Macedonia!

Here is Dr. Lamb’s response:

There are many “human” medications used in birds. Just as one example, people will take an antibiotic with the brand name Augmentin. The generic name for this is amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid. Birds can take this medication just fine as well but the brand used most frequently is called clavamox. They are both the same drug, just different formulations. If you are a veterinarian and are seeing birds I suggest getting the Exotic Animal Formulary by Carpenter as this has a nice list of medications that can be used in birds with appropriate dosages.
