Military Macaw laying eggs

I have a 22 year old Military Macaw who laid her first clutch of eggs this month. She is intent on sitting on them, so I’m letting her (for the moment). How long do I let her stay on the eggs? Most articles say until she gives up or for approximately 3-4 weeks.

Should I get fake eggs and replace the real ones?

Answer:

Hi,

Yes, she will likely get tired of them within 3-4 weeks. I wouldn’t give her fake eggs, as this can encourage egg laying. Don’t let her have a nest or anything she can sit in. Just leave the eggs on the cage floor. While it’s OK for her to sit on the eggs, you don’t want to encourage this by making her comfortable. I know that sounds mean, but forming and laying eggs is very hard on a hen, so it’s best to discourage nesting behavior.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
