Milk Thistle for Liver health

Hi, I have a question regarding the milk thistle and liver issues, should it be given as a grain or as an extracted oil?
I’ve done some research and found out that the highest level of silymarin (what actually helps the liver) is concentrated the most in the shell of a grain of the milk thistle, and that is what the bird does not eat. So i’m thinking if the oil have more silymarin than the grain itself?

Answer:

Hi Zuzanna,

Thank you for joining the webinar from Poland! We love seeing so many International guests. I have checked with Dr. Lamb, and her response is below:

Regarding milk thistle, I recommend people get the liquid form of it over the powdered forms or the whole seed. Although people can give the seed it’s going to take a lot of seed to get to appropriate levels of the active agent (silymarin) to be therapeutic. Also, the powdered form has been found to FREQUENTLY be contaminated with fungal organisms. So it’s much safer to use the liquid form. – Dr. Stephanie Lamb

Thank you for viewing the webinar,

Brenda
