Moving eggs

My parakeet laid 4 eggs in the food dish. If 1 or or more are fertilized the dish is too small to hold them. It barely holds her. So I moved the eggs to a nesting box. Will she follow the eggs or should i move them back.

Answer:

Hi Jamie,

This is typically a situation with no good ending. Clearly the eggs can’t be left in the dish or returned to it. Even if any did hatch, she is likely to accidentally crush the chicks or she may abandon them entirely due to not having enough room. But most likely she couldn’t incubate them properly anyway, so they will never start to develop.

She might follow them to the nest box, but most pairs will not do this. Is the male showing any interest? I would just leave them in the nest box to at least encourage the pair to start exploring it, and maybe next time she will use it.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
