My baby lovebird has wry neck and splayed leg.

Can a baby lovebird dye from wry neck and splayed leg? He is being hand fed and today appeared to be lethargic. I gave food bird formula and water .

Answer:

Hi,

There may be more wrong with the bird since it has two issues you know of. Deformities are often caused by over breeding birds, breeding bird that are too young, breeding related birds or genetic issues with one or both parents. If you bred this bird, are the parents at least 2 years old? Have they bred before? Did you rest them for 6 months after the last clutch? Have they had deformed chicks before? You should always rest a pair for 6 months between clutches, and only allow two clutches per year. You should be feeding your bird a nutritionally balanced diet such as pellets, with greens, veggies and some fruit. When they are breeding, they need an egg food. This can be a commercial egg food or cooked eggs with the shell washed, crushed and cooked with the eggs. If the pair has had deformed chicks before, or has them again, then do not breed them again. As for the little chick, you can take him to the vet to see if anything can be done for him. It doesn’t sound like he is doing well if he has become lethargic.

Take Care,

Brenda
