My budgie is not going over her eggs

My budgie laid 6 eggs, and after, the male started pecking her all over, now she has a big wound on her head, we seperated the male, and she isn’t going over them, what should I do?

Answer:

Hi Shahul,

She really can’t take care of the eggs and chicks by herself, plus she is injured. You can’t put the male back with her. If she has been off the eggs long enough for them to get cold, then they won’t develop anyway. It would be best to take the nest away, discard the eggs and take her to the Vet for treatment. A head wound can be very bad if it gets infected. Are your birds over 2 years old? If they are younger, then this may be why the male did this. When birds are too young, they just want to mate and not care for the eggs. He may have wanted to mate again and attacked her because she wanted to stay with the eggs. Because his attack was so vicious, you probably should not put them back together, and he might not be good to pair with another female.
