My lovebird started biting

My bird is biting I don’t know why but I have another lovebird that actually bites hard but the other one is tamed and it’s kinda starting to bite I have a baby brother I think she’s scared of him because he’s annoying her

Answer:

Hi Joanna,

Are both of your lovebirds in the same cage? If so, this is the main problem. When birds are caged together, they eventually form a bond and stop being tame. If you know the one is a female, even if she’s in a cage by herself, the female lovebirds can be very territorial of their cage. If you can get her away from her cage, usually she will be fine. They tend to bite more if they can see their cage. This is where stick training can help. As for your brother, he needs to be kept away from the birds completely. He’s clearly too young to understand and the more he teases them, the more they will bite. They are prey animals, so when you grab or poke at them, it’s something a predator will do and they protect themselves. They will stop trusting all people even if just one person or child regularly teases them. Until he is old enough to learn not to annoy or tease them, he can’t be around them, or he will ruin them as pets. I’ll give you the links to our behavior and training pages to help you better understand how to work with them.
