My mother conure isn’t sitting on her eggs

I have 2 conures, the female has laid an egg in her box that we attached to the cage, it’s been 2 days since she laid and she hasn’t sit on it yet, I’m not sure if there are more eggs but I’m getting concerned, she is still rotating the egg usually and we havnt been disturbing them, please tell me what to do

Answer:

Hi Lily,

She will likely lay more eggs, with one day between each egg. Some birds do not start to incubate the eggs until they have laid more than one. It sounds like this is her first time, so it is normal for her to not know what to do. First clutches almost always fail. All you can do is give them privacy and hope they figure it out. There is nothing you can do to make them sit on the eggs or care for any chicks. It’s all instinct and for some birds, they never figure it out. But let them try with this clutch and if they fail, or even if they have chicks, remove the nest box after the eggs are past due or after the chicks have left the box, and rest the pair for a few months. You should never leave a nest box up year round, or your birds will not stop breeding and will eventually die from overbreeding. You should limit them to two clutches per year. If they fail this time, and after a rest they fail again, then they may just not be good breeders. Not all birds figure things out. And if your birds are too young, they are much more likely to make mistakes or develop bad breeding habits like breaking or eating eggs.
