My new male cockatiel

About 15 days I got him. When I go to close to his cage he always goes away from me and moving very fastly and scared of me . I tried to calm down him but it doesn’t work. What should I do?

Answer:

Hi Mayuree,

It sounds like he probably was not hand fed. He will be hard to tame, and two weeks isn’t much time. It can take weeks, months or longer to tame a wild cockatiel. Never try to grab him – he is a prey animal and this is what a predator would do. I’ll give you some links to our taming and behavior pages. You have to go slow, one step at a time. He needs to learn not to be scared of your hands before you even think of trying to teach him to step up.
