Nesting ideas.

How do i set up a nesting area for our parakeets and is it normal if the female pecs at the males head making him lose feathers or is my mail sick with ring worm?

Answer:

Hi Candice,

It is important that both birds are about 2 years old. And they need to be bonded as mates. You should not have a pair together if one is picking the feathers out of the other. This can indicate that they are not truly compatible, or the one being picked on is not ready for breeding. Breeding birds need to be on a nutritionally balanced diet like pellets or our foraging diets. A loose seed mix will not provide the nutrition they need. They should also be offered dark leafy greens, chopped veggies and a small amount of fruit. When you do have them set up with a nest box for breeding, you should start offering an egg food – this can be cooked eggs with the shell washed, crushed and cooked with the eggs. They need a wooden parakeet nest box which should be attached to the outside of the cage, as high as possible. The cage should be in a quiet place – they need privacy when you have them set up for breeding.
