nibbling

was just blessed with a new baby budgie it is 6 weeks old and when ever I hold it or put my hand in it’s cage it likes to nibble on my hand and fingers not biting not sure if I should break this or let it run its course.

Answer:

Hi,

Gentle nibbling is normal and fine – he doesn’t know how hard he can nibble without hurting you. He is basically teething. If he nibbles too hard, you can firmly say something like “be gentle” while pushing towards him. Never pull away and never yell ouch! Also never punish him. You can offer a toy to divert him if he gets too rough. But generally budgie are gentle when you work with them from a young age.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
