Nutrition

How do you as a vet and companies like Lafeber decide what is the proper diet with changing seasons and age of the bird, particularly budgies (I have two about 2 years old)

Answer:

Hi Anne,

In general, the diet is going to be the same year round for a healthy pet bird that lives indoors. Some birds go through a heavier molt than others, and in this case, you would consult with your Vet about a possible supplement. Or some birds get extremely hormonal or are chronic or seasonal egg layers and need some nutritional changes to address the issues. You have to be careful about supplements and diet changes and anything like that should be done under the advice of a Vet. We do make a Senior bird diet, and we call it that because it has ingredients that can be particularly beneficial for issues that are common with older birds. But this diet can be fed at any life stage – it offers immune support, anti-inflammatory & anti-arthritic benefits, bone & joint support and many added benefits in addition to being nutritionally balanced as a complete diet.

Pet bird nutrition is still changing as we learn and understand more about what our birds need. If you breed birds or house birds outdoors, this is where a seasonal diet would come into play. But with our indoor pets, their environment is relatively stable year round, and does not change enough to warrant a specialized diet for different times of the year or different seasons.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
