Over feeding

Can my Kakariki eat too much he never stops eating should I take his dish out ocasionly

Answer:

Hi Annie,

If you are feeding a loose seed mix, then your bird won’t be getting the nutrition that he needs. When vitamins are added, they are lost when the bird hulls the seeds. Parrots eat to fulfill their nutritional needs, so if fed a balanced diet, you should be able to leave food in the cage all of the time without worrying about the bird eating too much. Parrots spend much of their day in the wild foraging for food, so it is best to always have some food in the cage. If he is eating seed constantly, it is because he isn’t getting his nutritional needs met. He should be on a nutritionally balanced diet like pellets or our foraging diets. If you do convert him to pellets, I would recommend you also offer our foraging diets because Kakarikis do eat seed as part of their natural diet. Our foraging diets are formulated the same as a pellet, but they are not ground up. They contain fresh hulled seeds which are more natural for him, as well as other nutrients to provide complete nutrition. You should also offer leafy greens, chopped veggies and some fruit as 20% of his diet. I’ll give you the link to our feeding guide for more information.
