Parakeet Diet

I have a 6 month old male parakeet. He has been fed seed and millet diet, but I’ve been trying to incorporate fresh fruit and vegetables. He will lick them and then never touch them again. He also won’t touch his mineral stone or his cuttlebone or bathe. Any advice?

Answer:

Hi Riah,

It can take a while for a bird to accept a new food. Keep offering the veggies and fruits – although he is more likely to eat the veggies. Parakeets love broccoli florets, dark leafy greens, finely chopped carrots, sweet potatoes, and other veggies. A seed mix is not going to provide adequate nutrition. You need to be feeding a nutritionally balanced diet. Pellets are an option, but parakeets love whole seeds. Our foraging diets are nutritionally complete like a pellet, but contain whole ingredients that are more natural for a parakeet. Please review the feeding guide I will post below. Leave the mineral block and cuttlebone in the cage – he will use it when he needs it – they do not use these often other than females when they are laying eggs. As far as bathing, parakeets do not bathe a lot. They will preen their feathers and stay clean that way.
