Parakeet doesn’t care much about me, but isn’t scared either

My parakeet stays inside his cage constantly. I’ve tried getting him out a bit just outside the cage or on the top of it but he stays inside. He isn’t scared of my hand at all and perches on my finger if presented to him. He’s active in playing inside of his cage so J tried putting some toys outside and he isn’t interested. Should I be worried? And if so, how can I make his situation better?

Answer:

Hi Elise,

You can continue to encourage him to come out by offering treats or maybe setting up a playgym. Sometimes a bird is scared of the small door and they lose their nerve when they get close. Try holding your hand at the door level, like a bridge, and offer treats to encourage him to come out. You can also leave the cage door open and see if he comes out on his own, but stay in the room and supervise him until he is back in the cage. That is not the ideal situation, because it can make them too independent, but everything with taming is baby steps, so if he comes out, you can work more with him on stepping on your hand. Mainly never grab him from behind because they are prey animals, and a predator would grab him from behind.
