Parakeet Doesn’t Sit on Egg

I have a pair parakeet (male and female). She started laying eggs (2) from the perch. The eggs went to the floor of the cage and both cracked. Two days later, she laid another egg (1) from the same perch on the floor again. Then I placed the egg in the nest, but she won’t lay on it. Is that normal? What should I do? Please help. Thank you.

Answer:

Hi Joi,

Do you have a parakeet nesting box? It needs to be a wood box, designed for parakeets, affixed to the outside of the cage as high as possible. If you just have one of those open nests, then this will not work. There is nothing you can do to force her to go in the nest box. Just be patient and hopefully she will figure it out. If she does this with the next clutch of eggs, then I would remove the box and let them rest from breeding for a while Then replace the box in a few months and see what happens. Some birds will never be good breeders no matter how well you provide for them. All you can do is set everything up right, and be patient and hope for the best.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
