Parrot nausea

Can parrots suffer from nausea? My bird recently vomited during a car trip. No history of vomiting. Is it possible to tell if the bird is nauseous without vomiting and if yes, what meds are used to treat it? She’s been treated for GI tract issues for a while but never vomited before. I’m afraid she might be nauseous on top of her known issues.

Answer:

Hi Daniela,

Yes, birds can definitely get car sick. We don’t know why some do fine and others will throw up. There really is no warning  – once you see him start to bob his head, he is going to throw up soon. With an adult bird, it’s generally not an issue unless he is on a liquid diet. If that is the case, you need to refrain from feeding him before a car trip. Hand feeding babies are very bad about getting car sick so the same advice is given for them. If on a normal diet, the chance of aspirating is very slim, but you could still remove his food and water an hour or two before a car trip. If it’s a vet visit, feed him when you get back. If this is to a destination where you are staying, feed him when you get there. There are some natural remedies that some owners recommend. Dr. Lamb will be doing a talk on natural remedies this summer.
