parrot toe nail issue

my s cr cockatoo broke a toe nail off close to the tip of the toe; how should i care for it ? will it grow back ?

Thanks for reaching out to Ask Lafeber.  If your sulfur-crested cockatoo broke off a toenail close to the tip of the toe, the nail will usually grow back as long as the nail bed and growth center at the base of the nail were not seriously damaged. Check the toe for any active bleeding and, if present, apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze pad and use styptic powder, cornstarch, or flour to help stop minor bleeding. Keep the toe clean by rinsing it gently with sterile saline if it becomes dirty and avoid using hydrogen peroxide or other harsh disinfectants that can delay healing. It is also a good idea to provide stable perches and keep the cage clean while the toe heals. Monitor the area closely for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, discharge, heat, pain, or limping. If the nail was simply broken off near the tip, it should gradually regrow over the course of several weeks to months. However, if the injury extends into the quick or damages the nail matrix, regrowth may be slower or the nail could grow back misshapen. If the toe remains painful, is swollen, continues to bleed, or if exposed tissue is visible, an examination by an avian veterinarian is recommended. If I can assist any further, please reach out.
