Picky Parrot Webinar – seed calories

how do you count calories for general spray millet or seed mixes that dont list calories

Answer:

Hi Tracy,

Loose seed mixes really should not be offered. They have very little nutritional value because the seed isn’t fresh enough to retain the nutrition, and any vitamins that are added are lost when the bird remove the hull. Spray millet is the same – you can offer it once or twice a week as a treat. Our foraging diets do have seeds, but the seeds are fresh with the hulls removed, so the added nutrients are not lost. As far as counting calories, Dr. Lamb discussed these as a guideline to help owners understand the amounts of extra foods you can offer. But it is important for a bird to always have food available in the cage for his physical and mental health.
