rebuilding next with eggs

Hello! I have a couple of finches that laid eggs around Sept 4th or so. I have noticed when I clean the cage and put in fresh lining, they rebuild their nest with the new material, even though there are eggs in the nest? Is this normal?

Also, one egg was found at the bottom of the cage and I put it back in the nest. Is that a bad thing?

Answer:

Hi Heidi,

These birds may be too young to breed and just don’t know what they are doing. Also, breeding birds need a lot of privacy or they won’t settle down and take care of the eggs. If cleaning the cage is disrupting them this much, then you may have to hold off until the eggs hatch, if the eggs are any good. I don’t understand what you mean about lining – is this paper they are shredding for nesting material? Or are you giving them new nesting material? Again, it’s best to do as little as possible around the cage when the birds are nesting. If they don’t hatch these eggs, I would remove the nest for a while and let them try another time. Adult birds do not need a nest except for when they are breeding and the nest should be removed between clutches to allow the parents to rest.
