Scared Parakeet

We got a 8 week old parakeet a few weeks ago and she still seems scared/ uncertain of us. She freaks out when I change her food and she doesn’t move around the cage a lot when we’re around. Sometimes she even hides her head under her food bowl. But other times she chirps, sings, and plays in her cage. How long will it take for her to know I’m a friend and this is a safe place?

Answer:

Hi Allison,

It can take a while for a bird to get used to a new home. This bird was likely pulled from the nest and placed in a cage for sale. So she has gone through 2 huge changes already in her short life. Always talk to her and move slowly around her. Don’t try to grab her or touch her. With time, hopefully she will become curious and want to approach you. Be patient with her because this is going to take time, and if she is a female, she might not ever be very tame. Below is a link to our articles on behavior, taming, training and other subjects that will help you better understand her.
