Seed nutrition


What are the healthiest seeds to feed our birds? I know sunflower seeds are bad for them, but what seeds are considered “good” or “better”?


Answer:

Hi Constanza,

The problem with feeding loose seeds is that they are generally not fresh enough to retain their nutrients and any added vitamins are lost when the bird hulls the seed. Seeds are fairly equal in nutritional value, including sunflower seeds. Sunflower seeds are not any less healthy, but they seem to have an addictive quality to them that makes parrots prefer them. Our diets do contain seeds, but we use fresh, hulled seeds sourced locally and combined with other ingredients to form a nutritionally balanced diet.
