My daughter was given a young cockatiel (12 weeks old) a little over a week ago. The bird cannot grip well and he shuffles when he walks. He sits on low perches at times but prefers the bottom of the cage, where he then leans back on his knees. I am just wondering if you have heard of this condition and if there is anything we can do to help. We do have an appointment with an avian vet next week.

I’m sorry to hear about this little guy’s problem. A Vet appointment is the best thing to do. This could be weakness from some type of illness. He could possibly have an injury or a birth defect. Malnutrition is also a possibility. The Vet will ask you about his nutrition and any history you know and will probably run some tests. Even if it is an injury, he can eventually heal. Be gentle when handling him until his appointment. Please let us know how he is.
