Smelly poop

Hey there my african grey who is over 20 years old has had smelly poop for weeks. Vet put him on antibiotics twice didn’t work. Suggested vinegar mixed with water still no change.

Need help any recommendations. Thanks.

Answer:

Hi Augusta,

I’m sorry about this problem. One question I have is does he hold his poop while he is in the cage and wait to go when you get him out? Or have his poops gotten larger? When they hold it, the droppings can take on a bad smell. The same goes if digestion has been slowed down for some reason. Some foods can cause an odor. Has your vet recommended any viral testing or imaging? Some diseases slow the digestion and even if your bird wasn’t around others, he could have always carried a disease and it is just now affecting him. I would recommend discussing more tests with the Vet, or seek a second opinion. We will be having our free Ask the Vet webinar next week on March 24th, so you might want to attend it and ask. If you can’t attend live, you can email the question ahead of time and we can ask for you.
