Smelly poop

Hello. My 41 year old African Grey has developed poop that is a little loose and smells like bile. She eats very well and is alert, so I don’t know what this could be. She had an episode a few weeks ago when she dropped two infertile eggs and I am wondering if there is any connection?

Answer:

Hi,

Is this one really large dropping she does in the morning, or is it every dropping? She could still be “nesty” and nesting birds tend to hold their poop all night, and do a really large one in the morning when they come out of the nest. It can have a strong odor. Otherwise, what you are describing is not normal if it is every dropping. There is the chance that she developed an infection or has some complication from laying the eggs. Given her age, I would go ahead and take her in to an Avian Vet for a check up. If something is going on, she could go downhill very quickly.

Thank you for your question,

Brenda
