species specific diets

Is there a trend for pet food companies to tailor specific food mixes to specific species of pet birds?
How about feather problems due to nutrition deficiencies?

Answer:

Hi Sunny,

There really hasn’t been enough species specific research to be able to scientifically formulate species specific diets. While we know some species seem to have a greater need for some nutrients than others, or less of something else, this information is mainly considered anecdotal due to no formal studies being done. It would take extensive research on wild and captive populations in order to formulate a truly species specific formula. In general, when you see something like that, it is probably more of a marketing tactic than a science based formula. Not to be confused with showing the species that it is recommended for on the bag, as this is done as a guide to the size of the food and which species it is more suited for.

There are many signs of nutritional deficiencies that can show up on feathers. This was covered by Kara Burns in a recent webinar, along with photos of feather problems and which deficiency it might indicate. You can view that webinar at the link below.
