Stopped singing

Hi! I have a male cockatiel, he’s a little over two years old, and a couple of months ago he stopped singing or making any chirping sound whatsoever. I’ve been told it can be because he’s changing feathers, but I’m worried and wanted to get a second opinion. He’s still as sweet and loving as ever, eating well and moving just fine, it’s just his singing that stopped. Thank you

Answer:

Hi,

A change in behavior can indicate a health problem. When in doubt, it’s better to get the advice of your Avian Vet. When going through a heavy molt, they can get grumpy or not as vocal and active. But to make no sound really isn’t normal. If he is just making less sound, it may be that he is forming a mate bond with you. They vocalize to communicate with other birds or attract a mate. He may feel like he has you and doesn’t need to call for a mate. You should avoid snuggling or petting him on his body. Any petting should be limited to only the head and neck area. If he isn’t even making a contact call for you when you are away from him, that is not usual behavior. Most 2 year old males are too loud because they are getting hormonal and thinking of mating.
