Sudden Loss of balance

My oldest lovebird who is about seven or eight years old suddenly acted sick and his leg was awkward. I quickly separated him and in few seconds he seems to be fine. He at first was unstable on standing looking confused and frightened then regained his mind back. Is this a sign of seizure or of old age?

Answer:

Hi Lillium,

It sounds like a seizure or possibly a stroke, but there is no way to know for sure without him being seen by a vet. It can be age related. I think I mentioned that while lovebirds are capable of living into their 20’s, many captive bred live 10-12 years due to too much inbreeding.I would not let him back with the flock. Lovebirds will attack a sick flock member, because a sick bird can attract a predator. It’s just instinct, but if he has another seizure and you aren’t around, the other birds might kill him.

Take care,

Brenda
