Sun Conure Chick Day 1

Today first chick was born out of 4 eggs that my pet Sun Conure laid. And the chick which came out of an egg is chirping continuously in the breeding box. Is this normal? What to do? Any tips?

Answer:

Hi David,

The best thing to do is give them plenty of privacy and hope the parents figure things out. They do not feed the chick immediately because it is still absorbing the yolk sac. If you try to intervene and hand feed it, the chick is not likely to survive. It’s hard to keep a chick alive from day 1. If you hover too much, it can make the parents nervous and they might not feed it. Make sure they have plenty of food in the cage – their regular diet is hopefully pellets or our foraging diets and not loose seeds. Also offer leafy greens, veggies, some fruit and most importantly right now they need an egg food. This can be a commercial dry egg food or you can cook an egg with the shell washed, crushed and cooked with the egg. It’s great they hatched a chick, but if this is their first time, be prepared that it might fail, as most first clutches are not successful because the parents are learning. But hopefully they will feed the chick and do well.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
