Sunconure bitten by cat

So after my conure was bitten which was at 8pm in the night I took her to the vet the next morning,it was hard trying to find a avian close by and the closest one to me was about an hour away. The doctor examined her and cleaned the wound and gave her injected antibiotics and also sent us home with a wound spray and enrofloxocin oral antibiotics,it seemed that her condition and mobility gotten worst that night and she’s barely eating and not pooping and just stays in one place,is this normal and will she recover.

Answer:

Hi Melissa,

Cat bites are very serious for birds and are often fatal. Even with treatment, the deadly bacteria in a cat’s mouth may have taken hold to the point that anti-biotics won’t help. There is also the possibility that she suffered other internal injuries that weren’t apparent. Hopefully the medication will work and she can recover. Giving an injection was the best thing the Vet could do to get her the initial boost for the anti-biotics to have a chance to work. If she hasn’t improved, you should check back with the Vet. I do hope your bird recovers from this, but it sounds like you did everything you could to get treatment for her as soon as you could.

Take care,

Brenda
