Hi,
It sounds like you have visited the pages I recommended and are doing your research & learning. Having an understanding of the natural behavior really makes a difference! You are correct that you should only get one bird so that you can tame it and build a bond. A budgie is a good choice, but any pet bird can adjust to their owner’s schedule. And since you will also have the pair, there will be other birds in your home to provide some company at least by vocal communication. As long as your single bird is in his own cage, then it will not bond with the pair. They will have each other and will not want to interact with another bird anyway, at least not physically. Budgies can be great pets. Whether you choose a budgie or something else, take time to pick the right bird. If you can’t afford a hand raised bird or a bird that is already hand tame, then a young budgie is a good choice. Spend time with the birds that are for sale and choose one that doesn’t run away from you when you talk to it. Find one that shows an interest in you. Of course do not try to reach for a new bird. As you have probably already learned, they are prey species so when you try to grab a bird, it thinks you are a predator. It will take time for a new bird to get used to your hand. It needs to trust you first, and then learn not to be scared of hands. It’s always best to let the bird approach you, rather than try to reach for a bird. So talk to the birds that are for sale, with your hands out if sight, and wait for the bird that comes to you and looks curious and is paying attention to you and listening to you. Once you choose that bird and take him home, you will continue that until he is comfortable with you, then you can start resting your hands where he can see them, and gradually be able to place your hand next to the cage without him running away. From there, you can try offering treats from your hand, and one day he should climb on your hand without being scared. This is a slow process, but be patient and he will get there, because budgies are very social and want a companion. It is best to have his wings trimmed before you take him home, for his safety and to train him more easily. His feathers will grown back when he molts and if you have bonded by then, he will not fly away from you.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
