Thank you so very much.

I’m absolutely comforted with your answer to my question today “Zebra Finches’ behavior” (re: Leo and the boys).
I will follow your guidelines, even though it breaks my heart to part with any of this adorable family. The babies have had a great beginning. I won’t let it happen again.
The nests will be taken out, and I can provide the privacy you suggested.
I won’t put Leo & Tink back in with them, but will try and find homes for them —“send them packing..lol.”

Sincerely,
Lydia

Answer:

Hi Lydia,

I’m glad I could help – at least I hope it helps! LOL I often feel like I’m having to give harsh advice. Birds have their own minds, and some don’t follow the “rules”. Our pet birds aren’t domesticated like dogs and cats, so they still have wild instincts that often clash with what we do. But we are always learning more and updating advice as we learn new things. It used to be a regular practice to send every finch home with a little nest. I do feel there is conflict because of the young males being the offspring and independent. In the wild, they would be driven away by the parents and this is nature’s way to prevent inbreeding. They probably feel some type urge, but don’t understand it. I don’t think that Leo & Tink will be having any empty nest syndrome once the wild boys have gone. 🙂

Tale care,

Brenda
