tips to cage a free roaming bird

Dear Lafeber team,

I have lovebirds that have been safely free roaming in my home their entire lives. Due to the fact that they are fighting a lot, it was recommended I keep them apart. I would love to keep them caged most of the day and allow them outside for a few hours a day, but they absolutely despise being in the cage. They’re not really used to playing with toys either. Do you have any tips on how to go about getting them used to the cage or is that a lost cause? Thank you so much for your help.

Answer:

Hi,

With birds, it’s about being consistent and using positive reinforcement. I think your older bird would adjust fairly quickly, just because he will be relieved to not have the young bird harassing him all the time. I would provide plenty of toys and treats, and ignore the when they try to get your attention to come out. Set boundaries and stick to them. Parrots are smart, and once they learn you aren’t going to give in, they will understand that they can find plenty of things to do in a large cage with toys to explore.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
