training

i bought a parakeet and i’m raring it to become a service animal, any tips or suggestions?

Answer:

Hi Madeline,

I’m not sure what you are trying to train it to do? I can’t think of anything a budgie could do as an actual service animal. If this is just as an emotional support animal, you should probably think about getting a small dog. For one thing, the average budgie lifespan in captivity these days is about 6-8 years due to poor genetics and poor nutrition. And if this is for travel, it’s not ideal for a bird, especially a small bird like a budgie. It’s a lot of stress, even if they get used to it. Plus you need a lot of paperwork for this type service animal in order to travel, and not all airlines or other types of carriers will allow birds. I’ll give you the link to our general care page that has articles on taming and training.
