Vacation

I am thinking about going away for 4 days.. I have 5 parakeets which are used to coming out of their cage in the morning and going in to sleep at night.. I work and always leave them alone in the morning with music on till I get home in the afternoon.. I have no one to sit them for me… Will it be ok to leave them with the cage door open, food, water for 4 days.? I can always watch them thru cameras

Answer:

Hi Abie,

I wouldn’t recommend this. It would be better for them to stay in the cage and have a neighbor look after them if possible. There are also pet sitting services that will come to your home. Four days is long enough for something bad to happen. Water can support bacterial growth in just a few hours If they soil the water, it will be badly contaminated very quickly. If they were to spill it or take baths and use it up, they can die from thirst in as little as 8-12 hours Even if you use a water bottle, it can leak, get clogged or become contaminated within a day. There can be issues with food, too. Again, a lot can happen in 4 days so try to find someone who can check on them and at least change the water daily.
