When do newborn baby birds start eating after they hatch

I have a nest of 4 baby birds on my patio that just hatched about 30 hours ago. I don’t see the mother feeding them. She sits on nest and flies Off every hour or so, but not bringing hatchlings any food. I have not seen another parent helping
out. Their eyes are shut. When should mother start feeding them.

Answer:

Hi June,

I appreciate your concern, but I’m sure the parents are taking care of the chicks. The other parent is likely nearby guarding the nest. The best thing to do is stay out of sight and let them care for their family. If they see you watching, it can make them nervous and afraid to leave to get food. If you can see them well enough to know they just hatched and their eyes are shut, then the parents can see you. All wild birds are Federally protected, so it is illegal for you to interfere. Only a licensed wildlife rehabilitator can help, and only if the chicks were abandoned. They will tell you the same thing if you call one. The motto is “If you care, leave it there”. The chicks are best off where they are – they have almost no chance of surviving if they had to be hand fed at this age. Thank you for caring – I’m sure you will see the little guys fledging in 2-3 weeks!

Take care,

Brenda
