Zebra finches

Hi 3 babies 3wks old why do the parents chase them like there being told off is this normal behaviour just found an egg I took the nest out so she shouldn’t be laying eggs I have removed the egg ?

Hi Penny,

This is a common age to lose the chicks, because the parents get more interested in breeding again than weaning the chicks. Be sure to put some spray millet on the cage floor for the chicks to learn to eat. Removing the nest and egg was the right thing to do. Hopefully the parents will focus on weaning the chicks. If the chasing behavior continues, try taking the male out and see if mom will care for the chicks. The parents instinctively want the chicks to go away once they are weaned, but some parents jump the gun and try to drive the chicks off too soon. Definitely remove the chicks as soon as they are eating well on their own.
