Parrot reproducing
Can you spay/neuter a parrot like a cockatiel
Hi Hope,
Spaying or neutering a bird is not a routine surgery like it is with many mammals. It has been done but is normally only done under extreme circumstances and is highly risky.
If your bird has a hormone related problem, then there are environmental changes you can make to minimize the issues. If you pet your bird, limit it to head scratches – petting on the body is something only a mate would do and a human can’t be a mate. Limit fresh foods to a couple of times a week. Limit light exposure to 8-10 hours a day – cover the cage in the evening and keep the cage covered all night. Move the cage to other places in the room about once a week. Rearrange perches and toys in the cage. Do not provide anything for shredding or anything the bird can sit in or use as a nest. Don’t keep the temperature too warm. These changes can generally help. If not, you may need to consult with an Avian Vet.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
