Lovebird trust (Follow up/Update)

Hello, it’s me again. This is meant to be a follow up question regarding Kiwi, my peach faced lovebird who I have asked about in a previous question

Lovebird Trust

I am writing this to inform you that it have been quite some time and I have worked on Kiwi was far as earning my trust and his. My folks have installed a greenhouse in our backyard and we took the liberty in moving Kiwi and his cage into it. Ever since then, he has been the happiest I have ever seen him. He has really come out of his shell and has opened up to not only me, but the rest of my family members as well! We are still unable to handle him, but he has shown interest in getting close to us, such as attempting to land on our heads. What can I do to build off of this shown interest in order for him to get us to trust us more?

Answer:

Hi Joann,

I am glad that Kiwi is happy in his new environment. It sounds like he is happy and content, plus he feels independent and secure since he can fly around. Since he is approaching people, he seems to have trust. There isn’t much more that you can do besides talking to him and spending time with him. If he has a favorite treat, you can try offering that to him from your hand. I think being semi-tame may be the nest Kiwi can do. It will be up to him as to whether he seeks out more interaction from people, since he is flighted. Of course make sure the greenhouse is secure as you wouldn’t want him to escape. You also need to be aware of any potential predators and make sure they can’t get in – rats, snakes, raccoons, dogs, cats & other animals outdoors can prey on a small bird. And weather is also a concern – extreme heat or freezing temperatures are both something that can kill a bird. Birds can especially have an issue with extreme heat. We recently hosted a webinar on keeping or taking pet birds outdoors – I’ll post the link so you can view the video. Otherwise, just keep up whatever you have been doing to earn his trust. He’s certainly in a better situation that he came from and your good care has helped him with this transition.

Thanks for the update!
