Female won’t allow male inside the nest

My female cockatiel is in the process of laying eggs she has laid her first but she sits in the nest as if she’s waiting. She is aggressive and makes the male leave. Before this they would always stay together preen and do all things pairs do this is there first clutch together what should I do?

Answer:

Hi Aayan,

Just be patient and see what happens. As long as she isn’t ripping out his feathers or drawing blood, then it’s fine –  some spats are normal. Laying eggs is very hard on her, so she likely isn’t in the mood for him to be around. If she gets too rough and aggressive, then you would have to split the pair up. Also keep in mind that first clutches almost always fail. They are learning now and need time to figure things out

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
