Hi,
Mating doesn’t have to result in eggs, and even if the hen laid eggs, they may or may not be fertile. If the eggs are just on the cage floor, the best thing to do is take your birds back home and let the owner of the hen discard the eggs. If the pair was bonded, in a cage together, and have a nest box, then that would be a different matter. You can only have a male and female in a cage together for breeding – you could not have all 3 birds together. And to hatch eggs, they need a nest box and both the male and female sit on the eggs and then care for the chicks. A single hen can’t be left by herself with the eggs and be expected to care for them. So if you take your birds back home, the best thing to do is discard the eggs. In the future, when someone else is caring for your birds, they should not be allowed to interact with other birds. It can be a health risk since there are diseases that some birds may carry, that can make other birds sick. But it is also not good to let them form any type of bond when you know this is a temporary situation.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
Brenda
