Budgies

I would love to let my two 3month old bogies fly outside the cage. When is best to do this? Will I ever gain their trust to allow me to touch them. I let them out and they were very startled and flew into the walls and furniture. Is it safe for them?

Answer:

Hi Mary,

When you have two living together, it’s generally not possible to tame them. They have each other and don’t usually have the interest in human contact when they have another bird as a companion. Add to that they are fully flighted, you aren’t going to make much progress other than getting them to at least trust you. If you have them in separate cages and have their wings trimmed, then you should be able to gradually tame them. As for letting them out, I would try that again anytime soon. They can easily break their necks or get a severe head injury by flying into things. They should be let out until they are used to the home and no longer scared of people. Again, this is where having their wings trimmed can help. They will always molt and the feathers will grow back, but meanwhile they can get used to being out without being able to fly into things. I’ll give you the links to our behavior and training pages to help you know more about how to work with them.
