Can I feed my cockatiel and budgie the same pellets?

I just recently got a baby cockatiel. I have plenty of budgie pellets (since there’s 2 of them and they don’t eat as much) and for ease (since my cockatiel is already accepting the food), I’d like to feed both birds the budgie pellets. Is that ok? Are the cockatiel pellets formulated with different nutrition? Thanks!

Answer:

Hi Shirley,

Yes, you can feed the same pellets to both species. The formulation is the same – the main difference is the pellet size. You might also offer all of them some of our foraging diets. While you may read that seeds are junk food, this is not true – in fact pellets are made from ground seeds, grains and added nutrients. Loose seed mixes do not provide enough nutrition because the seeds are generally not fresh enough to retain all of their nutrients and any added vitamins are lost when the bird hulls the seeds. Making seeds into pellets is one solution, but our foraging diets are formulated the same as pellets, they just are not ground up. Our Nutri-Berries, Avi-Cakes & Pellet Berries contain fresh, whole hulled seeds with other nutritious ingredients to provide complete nutrition in a more natural, whole form. You can feed our foraging diets alone or along with pellets to provide balanced nutrition as well as natural foraging exercise.
