Hi Rose,
Vasa Parrots have only recently been studied specifically. However, the ability of the female to change color during breeding season has not been widely studied and the actual process has not been pinpointed. Studies are focusing on the distribution of melanin. They are certainly an unusual parrot and gaining in popularity somewhat, but they are not for everyone. They need extra space and plenty of enrichment.
