Dove diamond

My diamond dove lost its feet. How do I care for it. I moved it from the cage that was shared with another diamond dove.

Answer:

Hi Evelyn,

Poor little dove – I’m sorry to hear this! Birds can be very resilient, and being a light bodied bird, your dove should adjust and do well. His wings should never be trimmed because he needs all of his flight feathers for balance. He needs flat, wide perches and a couple of platforms would be good for him. You should buy the solid wood type, and not the kind with a rough surface. If you search for a bird platform on Amazon, there are several types with natural wood surfaces that are square or made to fit in the corner of the cage. You should be able to find flat perches there, too. If he is bonded to the other dove, it would be good for him to have a companion. If you put the other dove with him, it will need some regular perches. Just make sure the other bird does not bully him. If this is a female, then having a male with her may not be a good idea because the male may want to mate, and can get aggressive with her since she is disabled. Also if the cage floor has a metal grate, you may need to remove it or keep it covered with paper towels.
