Dr. Echols Webinar Tail Injuries

“Mollucans, Grey’s and umbrellas are the ones I’ve seen the most(with tail base injuries). Is it because they’re heavy bodied birds?
Also how often does this progress to mestasis?”

Answer:

Hi Rose – Here is Dr. Echols’ reply:

This question, I believe, is in relation to the ‘tail disease’.  Yes, it is primarily noted in heavy body birds.  I suspect these problems start with excessive wing trims and repeated crash landing damaging the tail.  As these are not typically cancer related (which is a different problem), I have not noted metastasis.  This is primarily local disease.
