How do i stop my sun conure from laying eggs

Sun conure keeps laying eggs. What to do?

Answer:

Hi,

There are many things you can try. If you handle her a lot, don’t pet her on her body – stick to head scratches. Too much handling and petting can cause hormonal behavior and egg laying. Fresh foods are great, but if you are offering them daily, cut back to once or twice a week – a lot of fresh foods can also be a hormonal stimulant. Keeping the house too warm can encourage nesting. Of course do not give her a box, nest, bird tent or anything she can use as a nest. Do not give her anything to shred, including cage bedding. Do not let her get into dark areas when you have her out – if she seeks out a shelf or gets behind a door, she is looking for a nesting place. Try to limit her light to 10 hours at the most each day – cover her cage to make sure she gets enough sleep and not too much light. Move her cage to different locations when she acts like she is nesting. If none of these things help, you may want to consult with an avian veterinarian. Sometimes a hormone shot can help, but this should be the last resort.
