How many Nutri-Berries

how much nutriberries should a Umbrella Cockatoo eat and an eclectus?

Answer:

Hi Mary,

The amount will vary based on the bird’s weight, activity and metabolism. I’ve had two birds of the same species where one needed twice as many as the other because she was much more active. When feeding Nutri-Berries, you want to give them as many as they can eat, without wasting too much. This relates to wild behavior because in the wild, when food is abundant, the birds will take a could of choice bites and discard the rest of the food. This helps reseed the environment and feed ground dwelling creatures, but for us, it is annoying. LOL So when you give your birds too many Nutri-Berries at one time, they will do the same, and end up wasting a lot of each berry. Give them 3 or 4 to start with, and once those are eaten, give them more. If you find a lot has been wasted, you can place it back in the bowl as long as it didn’t get soiled. Sometimes one gets away from a bird by accident – happens to mine all the time. Eventually, each of your birds will need as few as 6 to as many as 10 berries per day. If your Umbrella is really large, he might need more. My Goffin’s eats 6 of the parrot sized each day.
