How should I proceed In bonding?

I recently acquired to two mature female parakeets. It’s been two weeks they’re still nervous and scared when I sit near their cage, they also don’t move from this one perch in their cage, they do not interact with toys at all. They do eat and drink water though.

Answer:

Hi,

Two weeks isn’t long at all for new birds settling in, especially 2 mature birds in the same cage. As for forming any type of bond with them, it’s not very likely. When you have a tame pet bird, you are a substitute for another bird as a companion. If a bird already has another bird as a companion, even when they are the same sex, they usually will be bonded and not have any interest in interacting with people. If you are patient with them and go slow, you may be able to get them to trust you and not be as scared when you are around. Female budgies usually are not as good as pets as the males are, but there can be exceptions. But again, two adult females that are bonded are unlikely to become tame pets. I’ll give you the links to our behavior and training pages to help you understand them better and know how to try to work with them.
