Isn’t he too young for hormonal behavior?

I have a 10 week old conure that has been being puffed up, bobbing and regurgitating for me, trying to hide in my hair .. is this normal?

Answer:

Hi Rea,

If the bird is indeed only 10 weeks, then no, he is not really old enough for this to be hormonal. How long has he been weaned and how long have you had him? Some birds revert to wanting to be handfed again when they go to their new home or when something in their environment is making them feel insecure. And they also want to hide as if they were back in the net. What you are describing could be an indication that he is not well in some way. He should not be regurgitating. If you are confident of his age, then I would recommend a trip to an Avian Vet for a check up. Bacterial and yeast infections are common in handfed birds, but the infection can turn deadly if left untreated for too long. I’m concerned that your little guy may not be feeling well.

Take care,

Brenda
